Located in Waco, Texas, Baylor University has an established reputation as an outstanding private Christian school in Waco, Texas. The university had humble beginnings in 1845 and didn't even have a campus for more than a year after it was established. However, today the campus is comprised of 735 acres and several different buildings. The school offers 151 undergraduate programs, as well as numerous graduate and doctorate programs. Many students choose Baylor for its strong tradition of Christian faith, excellent academic reputation, and a focus on community service. Both students and faculty participate in volunteering, giving over 150,000 hours of time on volunteer activities.
Much of the culture of Baylor University has been formed as a result of student input. The bears were voted as the school mascot in 1914, beating out more than two dozen other animals on the ballot. School colors were also student inspired. On a trip to a neighboring school a debate team member commented about how the combination of green and gold in the landscape was beautiful, and as a result the school adopted green and gold as its colors in 1897. The original version of the school song was also penned by a student.
