Founded by the Society of Jesus in 1863, Boston College officially opened its doors on Sept. 5, 1864. Now with an enrollment of 14,796 total students, this private, Jesuit institution offers 50 fields of study through nine schools and colleges. Undergraduate tuition for the 2011-2012 academic year is $20,740 per semester. The university has 56 majors and concentrations plus 21 interdisciplinary programs. Majors ranging from theatre to theology are offered. Graduate schools, a school of law and a school of nursing are also core to the university's academic offerings.
The Eagles athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division I level. There are 14 varsity teams for men and 17 for women. The student-athlete graduation rate is among the top 10 of NCAA universities at the Division I Bowl Subdivision level, and most teams compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The men's ice hockey team has historically been considered one of the best programs in the nation with four national championships.
Twenty-nine residence halls provide a home to more than 7,300 students with double, triple or quad occupancy. Residence halls are available on the following areas of campus: College Road, Upper Campus, Lower Campus Newton Campus and Brighton. The Office of Residential Life also offers a limited number of leased apartments to full-time graduate students in the Brighton area within a one mile radius of the campus. In addition, the Off-Campus Housing Office helps students, faculty, staff and alumni in advisory capacity to attain local apartment and other rental housing.
Although official Greek life is absent, the Boston College community is known for providing students a better social experience than schools in the same class or location. The university offers a well-rounded social scene with its close location to Boston, the activities around its Division 1 sports teams, and the many campus organizations and clubs. In addition to the challenging academics, there are many opportunities to develop into a leader throughout the community. With a mission rooted Catholic heritage, students have the chance to grow in their faith and commitment to others through participation in the campus community, volunteer service, civic partnerships and faith initiatives.
