California State University, Fresno, otherwise referred to as Fresno State, is a four-year college that resides at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. Founded in 1911, Fresno State was originally named the Fresno State Normal School. The original campus was located on what is today known as Fresno City College. In 1956, California State University Fresno moved to its current location.
Tuition at Fresno State costs $2,800 per semester for in-state students. Out-of-state students must also pay a nonresident fee of $372 per unit in addition to the basic tuition cost. Housing costs vary greatly, with on-campus arrangements averaging around $7,000 a year.
Fresno State has a number of distinctive academic programs. Its business program is exceptional and is consistently rated as one of the best business schools by the Princeton Review. The rehabilitative counseling program is also top-notch, having been rated 17th in the nation by the US News Ranking.
Another exceptional program at California State University, Fresno is the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology. This school is a leader in the emerging "New California," fueling important innovations in animal science, industrial technology and agricultural business. The College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology also has a unique enology and viticulture program.
With 19 varsity sports teams, the athletic department at Fresno State is certainly impressive. These teams are known as the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are a leader in the Western Athletic Conference, winning big in softball, basketball and baseball. In 2008, Fresno's baseball team was the national champion for its division. Although they have been successful in the WAC, the Bulldogs will be joining the Mountain West Conference in 2012.
Students can continue to be active in athletics without joining a varsity sport. there are several intramurals and club sports available, including volleyball, flag football, water polo, team tennis and ultimate Frisbee.
Campus life at Fresno State has plenty to offer. On-campus students live in one of nine dormitories located in the Student Courtyard. The residential housing area has an outdoor swimming pool and computer labs and is within walking distance of all academic buildings. In addition to the on-campus housing options, there are plenty of off-campus houses and apartments available to students.
Many students are involved in Greek life at Fresno State. Over 1200 men and women are members of Fresno's 41 fraternities and sororities, which include Delta Zeta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Theta Chi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and many more.
