Clemson University is a public land-grant university located in Clemson, South Carolina. Founded as an agricultural school in 1889 by Thomas Green Clemson, it began as an all-male military school. In 1955, it became a civilian co-ed institution and it now boasts an undergraduate population of over 15,000. A mid-size research university, the school is divided into five colleges: Arts and Humanities, Business and Behavioral Sciences, Engineering and Science, Forestry and Life Sciences and Health, Education and Human Development. Clemson was recently ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the 23rd best public university in the United States.
While a major research university, Clemson's relatively small enrollment size lends the university a more intimate feeling that is closer to that offered by many private liberal arts colleges. However, unlike most liberal arts schools, Clemson offers a fair number of graduate programs including nearly 40 doctoral programs. The school has recently begun expanding its graduate-level offerings and has added several new interdisciplinary PhD programs including Rhetoric and Planning.
Clemson also offers much in the way of social activities and athletics. The Clemson Tigers include 19 teams either in the NCAA's Division 1 or in the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Clemson has won several national championships including two in men's soccer, one in men's golf and one in football. In addition to its sports teams, Clemson also boasts an active Greek life. However, unlike many other major southern state schools, Clemson does not permit traditional Greek houses on campus. Thus, fraternities and sororities are either housed in on-campus residence halls or are located in houses off-campus. In addition to Greek activities, Clemson also offers more than 300 student-run organizations.
Housing options at Clemson are varied, with both on-campus dorm housing and off-campus apartment housing available. First year students are required to live on-campus unless they are over the age of 21 or are living with their parents within a 50-mile radius of the University. Approximately 58% of undergraduates live off-campus. Housing in the area is relatively affordable, with studio apartments averaging $450 a month.
Tuition and fees at Clemson are on par with that of other state schools in the Southern Atlantic area. In-state tuition is $12,346 a year and out-of-state tuition is $27,858 a year. The school estimates that room and board run approximately $7,034 a year and books and supplies average out to $940 a year. Financial aid is available through federal loans and through scholarships and need-based grants. Students seeking financial aid are encouraged to file the Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA).
