Originally established as Brown's Schoolhouse, Duke University was originally founded in 1838 by Quakers in the nearby town of Trinity, North Carolina. The school underwent two name changes before its 1892 relocation to Durham, North Carolina with significant financial backing from well-established Methodists Washington Duke and Julian S. Carr.

Shortly after establishing itself in Durham, Duke bestowed another donation upon the college to allow expansion in preexisting departments, but he had one condition. Duke wanted the college to offer equal opportunity learning for women. This marked a large step forward in the women's rights movement. It was not uncommon at that time for women to attend different colleges than men, so for one college to offer education options for both genders was unprecedented, a touch controversial, but very effective in making the college stand out from other higher learning institutions.

During its first few decades in Durham, the college was called Trinity College, but in 1924 when James B. Duke, the son of Washington Duke, bestowed a portion of the substantial $40 million Duke Endowment on Trinity College, the president of the college incited a campaign to rename the college after the Duke family. It was then that Duke University became the college's official title.

Today, Duke University contains 12 different schools for undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools, and seven additional higher learning institutes, making it one of the largest and most comprehensive universities in the United States. The Duke Forest just outside of the university also plays home to numerous research and preservation institutes, including the Duke Lemur Center and the Aquatic Research Facility.

Duke University values social interaction between students and requires 85% of undergraduates to live in on-campus housing on East Campus. Only 15% of undergraduates life off-campus. Greek life thrives in the university, boasting 15 recognized fraternity chapters. The university houses 15 recognized fraternity chapters and also serves as a home to the Blue Devils, a name shared between the 26 varsity sports programs offered by the university including football, lacrosse, golf, and basketball.

The average tuition at the university is $40,000 for undergraduates, and the yield rate averages approximately 42%. Undergraduates may choose to attend one of two different schools on campus: Trinity College of Arts and Sciences for liberal arts studies, or Pratt Jr. School of Engineering for engineering and materials science studies. Graduates have more options with 10 institutions to choose from to pursue legal, medicinal, environmental, or nursing degrees.

With a diverse range of students, individual schools, and many social programs to choose from, Duke University is a popular choice among undergraduate and graduate students alike. Furthermore, the university boasts the sixth highest number of scholarships in the United States, marking one more contributing factor that makes Duke one of the most respected and prestigious schools in the nation.
