Emory University
From 1914 to 1915, a small college seeking expansion gradually moved its various schools thirty-five miles west from the little town of Oxford, Georgia to the city of Atlanta . Founded by Methodists seventy-nine years earlier, its new home was to be on land donated by the founder of the Coca-Cola Company, whose brother had been the president of the Oxford campus and was to be the chancellor of the Atlanta campus.
From these beginnings, Emory University has grown into a top research university while maintaining its emphasis on teaching and traditions. It was rated number 20 of national universities in 2011 by U.S. News & World Report, and virtually all of its graduate programs were rated in the top 30 of their individual disciplines.
Today, it has 7,000 students in its four undergraduate divisions, including a school of arts and sciences, a business school, a nursing school, and a two year liberal arts option that remains at its original location in Oxford. An additional 6,000 students attend its graduate divisions of business, law, medicine, nursing, public health, theology, and graduate studies.
For the 2011-2012 academic year, undergraduate tuition is $38, 600. Graduate tuition in the School of Medicine for a first year student is $45,000.
All first and second year undergraduates live in campus housing, and 70% of all undergraduates do. They live in a variety of housing options, including traditional student residence halls, fraternity and sorority houses, and suites both on the main campus and on the nearby residential Clairmont campus. Housing rates range from $3,500 to $4,000 per student for a semester in most housing configurations. Graduate students are housed in two nearby complexes or in off-campus apartments near Emory.
Fitness and athletics for all have long been important to the University. Since 1960, its teams have been known as the Eagles, and use the eagle as their mascot.
Originally eschewing intercollegiate sports in favor of providing athletic opportunities for the entire community, the university built an unusually strong intramural program, which continues to this day. Intramural sports include swimming, tennis, track, table tennis, racquetball, softball, volleyball, basketball and flag football, among others.
Today, as part of the NCAA Division III, the university has 18 varsity teams. Both men and women compete in basketball, soccer, swimming and diving, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field. Additionally, men compete in baseball and golf, while women compete in softball and volleyball.
University Hospital, located on the campus and staffed by School of Medicine faculty, is ranked as one of the best in the country.
