Florida State University
History
The Florida State University (FSU) began as an institution of higher learning in 1851 for the purpose of instructing both men and women in the art of mechanics, husbandry, agriculture, the fundamental laws and the rights and duties of citizens. It is one of the oldest and largest state universities in Florida.
In 1856 the city of Tallahassee made an offer of land to the State Legislature to build a seminary. The Legislature voted to accept the offer and the bill passed in both houses. Tallahassee was chosen for its railway connections, the climate and the good people of the community.
Postsecondary education was offered to male students in 1857. The school became coeducational the next year when it merged with the Tallahassee Female Academy.
Acreage and Facilities
The few acres of land donated by the City of Tallahassee have grown into 1,550 acres with 15 independent colleges and 542 buildings. The area includes 451.6 acres in downtown Tallahassee where the main campus is located. Other locations are:
FSU has 50 years of experience as a leader in international study with study centers in Florence, Panama, London and Valencia.
Student Population
The student population in Fall Semester 2010 was 40,255 with 57 percent females and 30 percent minorities. FSU students represent all the Florida counties, all 50 states and 128 countries.

Athletics
Florida State University is the home of the Seminoles. Student athletes at FSU have the opportunity to be coached and mentored by some of the best coaches in college athletics. The Seminoles have won 14 national championships, and 50 ACC Championships.
FSU offers male and female teams in the major sports such as football, basketball and baseball as well as cross country, tennis, soccer, volleyball, golf, softball, swimming and diving and track and field.
The Florida State University ranked #11 on the list of the top 20 party schools for the school year 2010-2011.
