Founded in 1913 as part of the Georgia School of Technology and located in Atlanta, Georgia, Georgia State University is an accredited SACS-COC institution that offers over 250 degree programs within 62 areas of study. Students can attend full or part-time in the day or evening. Its six colleges (schools of education, law, policy studies, business, nursing and health, and arts and sciences) served over 31,000 undergraduates and graduates from all over the world in 2010. GSU is the leading urban research institution in the southeast region of the United States and one of the top 100 public universities for doctoral degrees. Its over 1100 faculty provide a first-rate education at the bachelor's, master's, specialist, and doctoral levels.
The GSU Panthers field 18 athletic teams in the NCAA Division 1 bracket, and both men's and women's teams have been highly competitive, sweeping the All-Sports Championships in their conference three of the last five years. The number one sport on campus is basketball. The school colors are blue and white.
Students can choose either on-campus or off-campus housing. Modern, safe facilities exist on-campus in downtown Atlanta. For students who elect to live off-campus, safe and well-maintained apartments can be found that offer close proximity to the campus, public transportation, and grocery stores. The university provides the Panther Express Shuttle that runs from Turner Field (parking is free) to the campus.
Tuition rates vary. Georgia undergraduates pay about $3600 each semester for a full course load while non-residents pay about $13, 500. Graduates pay a couple of thousand dollars more.
Many students claim they chose GSU because of the diversity of the student body and the programs offered as well as the modern cultural feel of the city. The university has a reputation as a world-class research institution, and students have found the faculty to be not only excellent educators but also extremely knowledgeable researchers in their fields.
Famous alumni include musicians William DuVall of Alice in Chains, Ludacris, and Ray Stevens. Actress Julia Roberts attended the school, as did several well-known politicians such as former White House Press Secretary Jody Powell and Jerry Huckaby, a former U.S. Representative from Louisiana.
