Louisiana State University has a rich history that dates back as far as 1853. Back then, the college was called The Louisiana state seminary of learning. It was located in what is now Pineville, Louisiana. The school closed due to the civil war June 30, 1861, but it reopened in April. On October 15, 1869, the college burned. It relocated to Baton Rouge on November 1, 1869. In 1870, the name was officially changed to Louisiana State University.
LSU was founded as a military academy, and it still has a military tradition. The two cannons that are in the front yard of the military science building are the same cannons that were used to fire upon Fort Sumter in 1861.
LSU adopted the tiger as the official mascot in 1896; the same year that Thomas D. Boyd assumed presidency.
The average fee for an undergraduate attending full time as a resident is roughly $2,800. For a non resident, the average fee is $8,200. For a part-time undergraduate, the fees start right around $2,000 and it goes down to $500. This fee based upon the number of hours the student takes. LSU offers on campus housing in residence halls for students, however, if a student chooses to live off-site, the college provides a listing of apartments near the college campus.
