Michigan State University

Founded in 1855, Michigan State University serves more than 47,000 students from across the United States and 130 other countries around the world. The 5,200-acre campus sits along the Red Cedar River in East Lansing, only three miles from the Michigan state capital. This location provides students with convenient access to a growing number of social organizations, entertainment venues, shops, and restaurants.

While today the university is well-regarded as a Public Ivy with extensive educational options, it began as the first agricultural college in the United States. In 1861 the institution was permitted to offer a four-year curriculum and master's programs, and by 1870 the faculty and administrators had welcomed their first female students. The university has gone through many name changes over the years, but since 1964 it has been known by its current moniker.

MSU offers over 200 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs through its system of 17 colleges. While the university is best known for its research focus, students can explore a variety of top-ranked programs including nuclear physics, engineering, business, education, political science, journalism, and osteopathic medicine. Degrees include bachelor of science, bachelor of arts, bachelor of fine arts, master of science, master of arts, master of fine arts, master of social work, master of business administration, doctor of philosophy, and juris doctor options. Tuition currently ranges between $372 and $532 per credit hour for residents and $970 to $1045 per credit hour for nonresidents.

With regard to housing, MSU boasts the single largest residence hall system in the nation. Freshmen are required to live in one of the 25 residence halls in the campus's Brody, East, Red Cedar, River Trail, South, or West Circle neighborhoods. In contrast, upperclassmen and graduate students can choose between on-campus housing in the residence halls or off-campus housing in nearby apartments.

After class, students can participate in one of 12 varsity sports for men or 13 varsity sports for women. Michigan State prides itself on its membership in the Big Ten conference. Current athletic programs include football, baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, crew, cross country, field hockey, ice hockey, golf, gymnastics, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling. Even Spartans who do not qualify for one of these athletic teams can still participate in an extensive number of intramural and club-level teams.
