Mississippi State University is a four-year university in Starksville, Mississippi, that offers Associates, Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees across 10 individual academic colleges. It is the largest university in the state of Mississippi, and hosts a number of academic and athletic accolates that span its nearly 150-year history.

Mississippi State was founded in 1862 as a land-grant college named the Agriculture and Mechanics College of the State of Mississippi. Its mission was redefined and in 1932, the school was renamed Mississippi State College. In 1958, a graduate school was added, giving the college the proper qualifications to be classified as a university and renamed as such. Since that time, a number of masters and doctoral programs have been added, allowing the university to expand to its current status.

Today, MSU boasts nearly 20,000 students and a 4200 acre campus. It offers over 300 student organizations, 29 greek organizations, and its own radio station and newspaper. It also has a well-established Honors College program that allows highly capable students to pursue more in-depth studies within their fields. Because the school was founded as an agriculturally based college, the school also still contributes greatly to academic research in agriculture by operating an agricultural and forestry experiment station on site.

The university offers more than 15 residence halls available to students of all ages. Campus apartments are also available for students pursuing graduate degrees. A wide variety of local off-campus housing is offered by various local businesses and individuals.

Mississippi State is an NCAA Division I school in the west division of the South East Conference. The Bulldogs boast athletic championships in football, baseball and basketball. They also offer golf, soccer, track and field, cross country running, softball and tennis. The University Golf Course has been nominated by GolfWeek and Golf Digest magazines as one of the premier golf courses in the nation. The university also boasts several new practice stadiums and fields, as well as a new athletic center that serves as a headquarters for all Bulldog Athletics.

Current tuition for undergraduate studies and Mississippi State run is approximately $5,500 for in-state students and $13,800 for out-of-state students. Room and board add an additional $7,700 to the total cost, making total costs closer to $13,200 and $19,300 for in-state and out-of-state respectively. The school requires an 18 on the ACT or a combined score of 860 on the SAT along with a complete high school transcript for admission.

In addition to MSU's massive campus in Starksville, the school offers classes at a second campus in Meridian, Mississippi. The Meridian campus is significantly smaller, offering fewer degrees, but it serves as an outreach to upper-level students wanting to complete their degrees.
