Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio was founded in 1870 as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College through a Land-Grant act signed by President Lincoln in 1862. Some people wanted the college to only teach agriculture and mechanical arts, while another faction wanted the college to be broader in its scope. It was finally decided by a narrow margin to become a broad-based liberal arts college. Studies in the new college began in 1873 and the name Ohio State University was adopted in 1878.
College Enrollment
Today the Ohio State University (OSU) is home to a total of 64,077 students at its five campus sites in central Ohio. The main campus is in the city of Columbus, which is the capital of Ohio. There are 4,238 international students and minority enrollment is over 14 percent.
Tuition for the 2010-2011 academic years is $8,994 for in-state students and $23,178 for out-of-state students in the undergraduate program. There are 170 undergraduate majors, 143 graduate programs and 106 doctoral degree programs. The University has approximately 12,000 course offerings. OSU has the third largest enrollment of all universities in the United States.
Academic Life
Ohio State University offers over 175 majors and the opportunity to graduate with a double major. There are personalized study programs where the student can define their own major, as well as pre-professional programs for students interested in the fields of pre-law, pre-medicine and more. The general information program offers a quick study of five majors. There are 12 schools in the OSU system, including the schools of Pharmacy, Social Work, Environment and Natural Resources, Engineering, and Dental Hygiene.
Students reside in on-campus housing as well as a large community of off-campus housing in the city of Columbus.
Ohio State University has competitive admission criteria. At least one of the standardized tests must include an essay writing score, though that score will not be used to determine merit scholarships or selection for other academic programs.
Ohio Buckeyes
The Buckeyes are not only the official name for the OSU Athletic Council, but it is almost a religion in the entire central region of Ohio, as the Buckeye is the State's tree. The whole town embraces the football Buckeyes, and team spirit is everywhere in the area. The Ohio State University sports teams are stellar, and athletic spirit is alive on and off campus.
Campus Life
OSU is located in the heart of Columbus, and it is a true college town. It is a city campus, but there are over 60 sororities and fraternities, and alumni support is strong. There are other student organizations offer that the chance to get involved in many different areas to make a difference.
