Pennsylvania State University was founded in 1855 and is currently one of the largest colleges in America. PSU has many campuses throughout the state of Pennsylvania including the Penn State Dickinson School of Law located in Hershey, five special mission campuses, and nineteen commonwealth campuses. Its University Park campus is located within the Borough of State College and College Township, Pennsylvania. University Park is placed within the top 15 of highest ranked universities in the nation, and is considered one of the nation’s top Public Ivy Universities.
Penn State has a long and dedicated history to public service and research, and was one of the first colleges to recognize minorities in its admissions policy. The first two women were enrolled in 1871, followed by their first African-American student enrolled in 1899. They also insisted very early on in allowing integrated sports- being one of the first schools to do so. PSU has achieved high merits for their athletic departments with their Nittany Lions sporting events and teams. Their extensive list of athletic teams spans football, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, lacrosse, track and field, baseball and others.
Nearly all of the campuses run by PSU have on-site housing, with University Park offering the largest number of student dorms. You will also find apartments nearby for off-campus living options. As one of the largest universities in the nation, you will find that PSU has many benefits for students wishing to remain on campus, and for those who live nearby as well. Annual enrollment on average tops 44,000 students on the University Park campus alone. Combining all of PSU’s campuses and schools there were more than 94,000 students enrolled within the 24 schools PSU offers.
The University Park campus is the most difficult to get accepted to in comparison to the other campuses available through PSU. They have an approximate acceptance rate of 51% out of the total number of students who apply for admission each school season. It is part of Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth System of Higher Education. As such, it does receive some funding from the state and is related to the state, but PSU received less state given money in 2006 than any of the other three state related schools, obtaining the majority of their funding through independent means and is therefore not under direct control from the state itself.
