Texas A&M University, or better known as TAMU, has roots dating back to 1862 with the passing of the Morrill Act by the United States Congress. With the passage of the act, endowments for colleges were established through the auctioning of public land grants. In 1871, the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas was established by the Texas Legislature. Nearly 2,416 acres were set aside for the school campus near Bryan, Texas and construction began shortly thereafter.

TAMU's history is checkered with significant points throughout the history of the United States. The university opened its doors in 1876 with only 40 students and 6 faculty members, all of whom served in the school's student military organization known as the Corps of Cadets. Until 1911 when women were finally admitted, the school was an all white male institution. On top of adding females into the mix, in 1915 TAMU also bolstered its academic prestige with the addition of the School of Veterinary Medicine. Even from its inception, Texas A&M had always had military ties and it was no exception that with the onset of World War I during 1918 that nearly 49% of TAMU's graduates went on to serve in the armed forces. The tradition continued when World War II erupted as over 20,000 graduates went on to serve and 29 of them even advanced to the rank of general. In 1997 the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum was founded on the Texas A&M Aggies' campus, giving the school the distinction of being one of the only few to have its own presidential library.

Today TAMU's student body has swelled to a population of over 49,000 encompassing all 50 states and representing over 130 individual countries. TAMU centers have been established abroad in places like Italy, Costa Rica, and Mexico while campus branches operate in Galveston, Texas as well as the nation of Qatar. Texas A&M boasts one of the largest veterinary colleges in the nation and has the one and only College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. Academically, the Aggies rank among the country's top ten universities in the total enrollment of National Merit Scholars. Texas A&M's main campus sits within College Station, Texas, that combined with Bryan, makes up the Bryan-College Station metropolitan area which is the sixteenth largest in the state of Texas.

Athletically, the TAMU Aggies are a heavyweight player in the NCAA Division I-FBS Big 12 Conference. Originally they were charter members of the Southwest Conference until it was dissolved in 1996. Over the course of their history, the Aggies have won over 138 Southwest and Big 12 titles and 11 national championships. Aggie football fans are known collectively as the "12th Man" and it has been a tradition since 1922 for the entire student body to stand during the whole game in support.
