The university staff recognize the importance of maintaining great health and on the campus there are multiple recreation facilities including gyms, swimming pools, and outdoor equipment access available to students and faculty.
For both prospective athletes as well as sports fans, the university also hosts men's and women's athletics. The school mascot is the Tritons and the university hosts 23 teams from various sports. Some of the more common sports hosted at UCSD are baseball, basketball, soccer, track and field, golf, softball, tennis, and volleyball. Some additional sports at UCSD are water polo, crewing, fencing, and diving. The university competes for some of these sports in the NCAA Division II.
