The University of Arizona was founded in Tuscon in 1885, before Arizona had even become a state. The first classes were held in 1891, when 32 students enrolled. However, because there were no high schools in Arizona Territory at the time, only six students were deemed prepared to begin a university education. UA began a preparatory school for the remaining enrollees, which it maintained for the next twenty-three years. The campus and student population grew gradually over the years. Today the University of Arizona enrolls just under 40,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students throughout its 11 schools.

The university offers degrees in a wide range of subjects. Undergraduates and graduates can study humanities, sciences, engineering, and education. The school also offers professional degrees in nursing, medicine, pharmacology, public health, and management. UA is awarded hundreds of millions of dollars each year for research, and is renowned for its space research and exploration programs, receiving more grant money from NASA than any other college in the country.

The university maintains a variety of residence halls on campus which mostly cater to undergraduate students. The school also assists other students in finding off-campus housing by listing available apartments online and helping students pair up with roommates.

Undergraduate tuition costs were $9,286 for Arizona residents and $25,494 for non-residents in the 2011-2012 school year. Graduate tuition in the same year was $10,840 for residents and $25,802 for non-residents.

The University of Arizona athletic program fields 18 NCAA teams. The team earned its mascot name, the Wildcats, from an article published in a California newspaper after a game against Occidental College, which said "the Arizona men showed the fight of wildcats." Teams have competed in the NCAA's Pacific-10 conference since 1978 and recently joined the newly formed Pac-12 South conference. The Wildcats' biggest rivals are the Arizona State University Sun Devils, which is the only other Arizona team to compete in the same division. The Wildcats are known as strong competitors in football, baseball, and golf. UA's ice hockey team, known as the Icecats, are strong contenders in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, despite being from a desert state. The softball team is also recognized as one of the most successful collegiate teams in the country, having won 8 national titles.
