University of Arkansas Is Home To More Than Razorbacks

The University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas, is home to the Razorbacks, also known as the Hogs. The Razorbacks football team is a longtime member of the Southeastern Football Conference (SEC). It also has mens' and womens' basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, volleyball, golf, tennis and other sports teams. Like many Southern schools, it takes great pride in its athletic accomplishments.

However, the University of Arkansas is far more than its football team and athletic department.

UA has been a key part of education for almost 150 years. Currently home to more than 21,000 students, it has more than 200 academic areas of study with many undergraduate major concentrations and graduate degrees. In academia, it is known for animal science, poultry science, agriculture, architecture, creative writing, Middle Eastern studies and business.

UA began as a two-building campus called Arkansas Industrial College in 1871. The first graduation class in 1876 had eight students. in 1899, its name was changed to the University of Arkansas.

Now more than 345 acres with 130 buildings, UA provides housing for its students, buildings for academic study, playing fields for University and intramural sports, gyms, auditoriums and libraries. It's Fine Arts building was designed by the architect, a UA alum, who designed the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The Sam M Walton School of Business was named for the Walmart billionaire. The Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation gave the university some $350 million, the largest contribution ever to a university. J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences remembers the Arkansas senator who inspired the world renowned Fulbright fellowships. The Fulbright Center for Peace is also part of the UA campus. The Clinton School of Public Service honors Arkansas native, former Governor, and former President, Bill Clinton. Both President Clinton and Secretary of State Hilary Clinton were law professors at the UA law school in the 1970s. Fifteen dormitories offer a variety of housing choices for thousands of students. Most dorms are co-ed, although four offer single-sex only housing. One dorm is for honors students. Off campus housing in Fayetteville includes thousands of apartments from as low as $350 a month. Also offering housing, the many sororities and fraternities provide houses where their members can live. Greek life is a big part of the University of Arkansas social scene.

An average semester at UA is only $3500 for an in-state student taking a full course load. Add another $4000 for room and board and the student pays about $7,500, one of the lowest rates in the south for a flagship state university. Out of state tuition is about $8,000 per semester plus room and board.
