Incorporated in 1785, the University of Georgia is one of the oldest public universities in the United States, second to only the College of William & Mary. A land grant of roughly 40,000 acres was established by the Georgia General Assembly in order to create the institution and the board of trustees named Abraham Baldwin the first president of the university in 1786. The original land grant was divided and sold off to raise funds for the establishment of the college itself which was to be built on a tract of 633 acres along the Oconee River in Athens, Georgia in 1799.

UGA has a rich history encompassing several key markers in the United State's timeline. The university closed its doors in October of 1863 and did not reopen until January of 1866 due to the American Civil War. At the time of re-opening only seventy-eight students enrolled including injured soldiers younger than thirty. Over three decades later, in 1903, the University of Georgia would finally begin educating female students. Up until that time the student population of the school had been limited to white males which was changed even further in 1961 when racial integration was achieved.

Today UGA has grown into an educational institution boasting more than 50,000 members in its National Alumni Association. Since the establishment of the Hope Scholarship in 1993, which allows any residents in the state of Georgia who maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher to attend any public college they wish, the university has boosted both its size and reputation. In 2010, national rankings placed UGA among the top 20 public universities in the country. The college itself is composed of over sixteen individual colleges and schools with the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, School of Law, and School of Social Work to name just a few. The university features seven different on-campus housing dormitories while the city of Athens provides a bevy of additional off-campus housing options.

The University of Georgia's rich athletic tradition embraces the Bulldogs as its chosen mascot and its varsity teams operate under the NCAA's Division 1-A in the Southeastern Conference. UGA's arch-rival is Auburn University and the first football game played between the two schools dates back to 1892 helping to earn it the title of "Deep South's Oldest Rivalry". The university has won many National Championships across several athletic programs. UGA's Gymnastics team owns an NCAA-leading 10 National Championships alone.
