U of H, founded in 1927, officially became the University of Houston in 1934. The university adopted the cougar as its mascot in 1947. Student enrollment stands at over 38,000 and the college was voted 2nd most racially/ethnically diverse university in the U.S. The university has put more than $220 million into improving the 667 acre campus. Among improvements include the M.D. Anderson Library and the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The Science and Engineering Research and Classroom Complex consist of three buildings; a five story research building, a two story classroom building, and a two story auditorium. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts is home to the many creative arts programs at the college and welcomes world renowned artist, writers, and performers every year.
The campus provides housing for 6000 students in seven different residential communities. The college strives to bring students with similar majors together in major-specific wings so that students can get the most of their time on campus. Living on campus offers advantages and securities that off campus living can’t provide. However, students preferring to live off campus can choose from nearby apartments and suburbs such as Pearland or Sugarland at an affordable rate. Students are also allowed vehicles on campus and must obtain a parking permit.
Tuition for UH students living in the state of Texas runs around $19,000; this covers classes, room and board, estimated books and supplies, and other living expenses like transportation and meals. Many students are eligible for grants or financial aid to assist with tuition. The university’s website offers information on obtaining loans as well as work study opportunities. UH offers twelve colleges and departments: Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture, C.T. Bauer College of Business, College of Education, Cullen College of Engineering, Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, UH Law Center, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, College of Optometry, College of Pharmacy, Graduate College of Social Work, and the College of Technology. Through these colleges there are a total of 120 undergraduate major programs to choose from.
UH offers over 400 clubs, fraternities/sororities, and leadership programs to heighten the college experience. There is a group of students for every interest a person could have. The college boasts a variety of sports and activities to suit everyone; baseball, basketball, and soccer for the traditional sporting experience and fencing, paintball, and water polo for those looking to try something new. U of H host musical and theatrical performances as well as art exhibits to give students something on campus to do in their free time. There is always something for students to do at the University of Houston.
