Overview
The University of Kentucky is one of two public land-grant universities in the Bluegrass State and is the largest public coeducational institution with an enrollment of more than 27,000 students. According to U.S. News & World Report, UK also ranks number one in Kentucky in terms of research grants. The university comprises 16 colleges, including 93 undergraduate programs, 99 masters programs, 66 doctoral programs, and four professional programs. The University of Kentucky also boasts fifteen libraries, including its largest, William T. Young Library, a federal depository of special collections. The average cost of tuition is $8123 for in-state residents and $16678 for out-of-state residents.
History
The University was founded as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky in 1865 by John Bryan Bowman, a noted lawyer and educator. The school became known as “The University of Kentucky” in 1916, four years after it opened its graduate school. By the early 1960s, the UK had expanded to include a professional medical program which includes the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and Dentistry. Other colleges include the College of Agriculture, Human and Environmental Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Economics, College of Communications & Information Studies, College of Dentistry, College of Design, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Fine Arts, College of Health Sciences, College of Law, College of Public Health, College of Social Work, The Graduate School, Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce and the Martin School of Public Policy and Administration. Notable alumni of the university includes seven governors, two senators, a congressman, two Noble Prize winners and actress, Ashley Judd.
Campus Life
The University of Kentucky is located in the heart of beautiful Lexington, surrounded by rolling hills, pastures and many horse farms. The university is major academic and social complex made up of three separate campuses: North, South and Central. These campuses house many academic and residence halls. There are 21 residence halls to choose from and, although there are a number of off-campus apartments for rent near the university, living on-campus is considerably cheaper. There are more than 400 student-run organizations and more than 40 fraternities and sororities. There are two radio stations serving the school. The UK newspaper is The Kentucky Kernel and the yearbook is the Kentuckian. The literary magazine is The Limestone.
Athletics
Although known mainly for its basketball and football programs, the University of Kentucky fields teams for all major sports including track and field, baseball, golf, tennis, rifle, gymnastics, swimming, diving, soccer, ice hockey and volleyball. The Wildcats have won national championships in a number of sports, most notably in basketball. The Kentucky Wildcats basketball team has won a total of seven national championships.
