The University of Maryland, located in College Park, was founded in 1856 and has become one of the leading research universities in the United States. Often abbreviated as UMCP, the university began as an agricultural college named the Maryland Agricultural College. It wasn’t until the 1920’s, after a serious fire nearly destroyed the entire campus, that it received its current moniker. Today, the university is attended by more than 35,000 students and has grown to become the largest university in Maryland.
Academically, UMCP is considered to be a great research university, in part due to the many federal partnerships it has received due to its close proximity to the nation’s capital. Many research programs are sponsored by or receive funding from NASA and NIST. The university also offers more than 120 undergraduate degree programs, and more than 100 graduate programs. These programs range in variety from English Language and Literature to Jewish Studies, taught at the university’s 13 colleges or schools. UMCP is also considered to be fairly selective of potential applicants. UMCP’s admissions rate is approximately 42%, requiring applicants to have four years of English and three years of math and sciences.
One of the unique aspects of attending UMCP is their living-learning programs. These optional programs house students together based upon their academic interests, allowing for students to connect with faculty and other students not only in the classroom, but in their everyday lives. This just one example of on-campus housing, however, as the campus has fourteen different residential communities available to live in. There is also plenty of off-campus housing, including apartments and rental houses.
UMCP is also well-known for their athletics program. The athletic teams are all known as the Terrapins, based upon the school’s choice of the diamondback terrapin, a kind of turtle, as the school’s mascot in 1932. Testudo is the name of the university’s mascot, and is featured throughout the university by way of several statues. Two of the top athletic programs include basketball and football, with UMCP winning a 2002 NCAA championship for basketball, and a 2001 ACC conference championship in football. In total, there are 27 different varsity programs at the university, including lacrosse, soccer, and wrestling. Every Terrapins team sports the UMCP colors of black, gold, white, and red.
Since its humble beginnings, the University of Maryland College Park has grown to become one of the top universities in the eastern United States. Now standing at nearly 1,250 acres, UMCP is now a destination for many high school grads.
