The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 in Detroit. It moved to Ann Arbor in 1837 at a time when Ann Arbor had a population of 2,000. The University of Michigan (UM) was one of the first public universities, though it did not admit women until 1870.

UM’s tuition for in-state freshmen and sophomores is $11,837 (excluding room and board) and $13,343 for juniors and seniors. Out-of-state student tuition is $36,001 for freshmen and sophomores and $38,529 for juniors and seniors (excluding room and board). There is ample on-campus and off-campus rooming opportunities for students.
