Paving the way toward scholastic endeavors in the south, the University of Mississippi was conceptualized in 1844, making its grand entrance into the world, and finally opening its doors in 1848, in Oxford, Mississippi. In the university's first year, 80 students studied in what is now the school's oldest building, The Lyceum, which housed all classrooms and faculty offices.
In 1861, classes at the University were abruptly stopped with the outbreak of the American Civil War. Many faculty members and the entire student body enlisted in the Confederate Army. During the war, the school found itself intertwining with history in the making. At that time The School of Medicine acting as a hospital, opened its doors to both Confederate and Union soldiers. Today, the School of Medicine is located in Jackson, Mississippi.
Exiting the Civil War, students returned to their school days, reinvesting themselves in school pride. 1897 proved to be yet another year of major importance for the university's tradition. Holding a contest to name the school's yearbook, student Elma Meek chose "Ole Miss", upholding a sense of Southern pride. After winning the contest, the nickname quickly became a household name, representing the university itself.
The Rebel, sporting a connection with the old south, was chosen to be the school's mascot after originally taking the name "Mississippi Flood". Designed in the 1936, Colonel Reb became the face of the University of Mississippi. By 2003, Colonel Reb was officially deemed offensive. Students of Ole Miss requested to partake in renaming the school's mascot, and in the spring of 2010, the Rebel Black Bear was hired for the vacant position.
Steeped in history, Ole Miss has been the home of many successful athletes including football alumni Archie and Eli Manning, and basketball's Joe Gibbon. Archie Manning's football number, 18, is the current campus speed limit.
The University of Mississippi, the first in the south to establish a college of liberal arts, has acquired many other specialty schools including the school of accountancy, the school of education, business administration, applied sciences, engineering, pharmacy, and journalism. The university offers more than 100 programs of study and contains four other branches in which to study. Students may attend working diligently to obtain bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees.
For those interested in attending Ole Miss, 14 halls of residence are available. Freshmen with thirty credits or less are required to live on campus. Fees range from $1730 to $5000 for the year. Students with thirty plus credits may choose to live off campus in unaffiliated housing in Oxford.
