The first call for a public school system and a university of higher learning came from George Washington Steele, Governor of the Oklahoma Territory in 1889. At this time, Oklahoma was simply a territory which existed near Indian Territory and would not even become a full-fledged state for another 17 years when the two territories merged. In 1890, the legislature of the Oklahoma Territory established the state university in Norman, as well as two other colleges in Stillwater and Edmond. In 1907, Oklahoma was finally admitted into the United States of America and the Norman Territory University was renamed as the University of Oklahoma, also known as OU.

As with all of the older universities in America, OU has an interesting past with several notable dates in its historic time line. In January of 1903 the university's one and only building, the "Rock Building", burned down along with many of the university's early records. This temporary setback did not deter the administration, however, and construction efforts to rebuild began almost immediately. Over the next few decades the university expanded rapidly and by 1932 the campus encompassed nearly 167 acres of land. By 1945, OU experienced a sharp drop in enrollment, like many other universities, due to the onset of World War II. At this time, the total number of students enrolled sat at 3,769 but by 1965, well after the war, enrollment swelled to over 17,000. By 1994, OU's campus development boasted new facilities such as the ExxonMobil Lawrence G. Rawl Engineering Practice Facility, the Research and Medical Clinic, and the expansive Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.

Today, the University of Oklahoma enrolls more than 30,000 students. Academically the university offers 463 majors and certificates from 21 distinct colleges and is served by over 2400 full-time faculty members. On-campus housing options include three 12-story dormitories while the vibrant city of Norman provides excellent off-campus housing opportunities. Scholastic recognitions include OU ranking first among all U.S. public universities in the number of National Merit Scholars enrolled, ranks among the top ten in the country in terms of overall academic excellence, and headlines 28 Rhodes Scholars for the state of Oklahoma.

Athletically, OU's sports teams are known as the Sooners. This nickname was given to early settlers who staked claims illegally inside the Oklahoma Territory before the land was offered officially. OU participates in the NCAA Division I-BCS as a member of the Big 12 Conference. Aside from the its 18 team NCAA National Championships, OU's storied football program has won seven national championships over the course of its history and produced five Heisman Trophy winners. The University of Oklahoma's main rival is the University of Texas and annual showdown is known as the Red River Shootout.
