The University of South Carolina (USC) started with one building in 1805 and now consists of 11 buildings in a horseshoe form on a beautiful lawn in Columbia, South Carolina. There are campuses that offer four-year degrees in Aiken, Beaufort and the Spartanburg-Greenville area. Sumter, Lancaster, Allendale and Walterboro in South Carolina host two-year campuses of USC. The University of South Carolina is growing as it plans the development of Innovista which is an infrastructure that will support nanotechnology and environmental studies. Innovista will create jobs that will boost the per-capita income in the state, and attract business to the campus.

USC Programs

University of South Carolina has 14 schools that grant degrees, and boasts 324 degree programs. The schools include the School of Music, Pharmacy College, and College of Nursing, along with the School of Medicine, School of Law, and the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sports Management.

USC has almost 2,200 full-time faculty members and nearly 4,300 supportive staff. Recognition of distinction was awarded to the University as one of the highest level of research institutions in the United States. The faculty was responsible for over $218 million in research and training program funding in 2010. In the 2009-2010 academic year there were a total of 8,668 degrees awarded to students.

Student Life

There are more than 44,000 students living in on-campus and off-campus in the Columbia SC area. Full-time tuition averages around $9,300 for in-state residents and $24,000 for out-of-state students. School colors are garnet and black, and the athletic mascot is the mighty fighting Gamecocks.

Students come from around the world and with diverse backgrounds. There are international students representing more than 100 countries, and students transfer from technical colleges as well as prestigious institutions of higher education. There are more than 300 clubs and organizations for students to connect with other students, as well as volunteer and service opportunities as a way of giving back to communities. The beautiful campus is called the Horseshoe, and is a gathering place for student’s throughout the year.

Students enjoy interacting with other students who are working towards future success. The average SAT score for incoming students is increasing yearly, up to 1187 currently. There are programs to help transferring student who enter from a technical college called the Bridge Program, and the Gamecock Guarantee assists qualified residents of South Carolina with tuition. The Engineering and Computing Expanded Life Scholarship also provides financial assistance for 100 freshmen from the state.

The University of South Caroline provides a challenging educational experience along with a strong student activity life in the heart of Columbia.
