The University of South Florida

With its central location in Tampa, Florida and satellite campuses in St. Petersburg, Sarasota-Manatee and Lakeland, the University of South Florida is considered one of the top universities in the state. It was founded in 1956 by its president John Allen, who followed his mission to create the first university built from the ground up in the 20th century. With its 1960 charter class falling short of 2,000 students, the university has come an extraordinary distance, with nearly 48,000 students in 2011. During its genesis, there was debate regarding the name, with such other options as Sunshine State University and Citrus State University.

Currently, USF is the ninth largest university in the United States, and it is also part of the Big East conference for athletics. Students who attend the university are met with a plethora of academic options. The thirteen colleges consist of: Arts and Sciences, Behavioral and Community Services, Business, Education, Engineering, Honors College, Marine Science, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, The Arts, and the University College. Both undergraduate degrees and certificates, and graduate degrees and certificates are offered. There is also a wide variety of student groups, associations and fraternities or sororities that students can easily join. The University of South Florida has something for everyone.

Students attending the university are eligible to live in on-campus housing or off-campus apartments near the university. There are 18 on-campus residence halls and 14 fraternities and sororities. Any on-campus residency can be paid for with tuition payments. Tuition for undergraduate Florida Residents is around $170.00 per credit hour at the main campus and $150.00 per credit hour at the satellite campuses. Undergraduate Non-Florida Resident tuition is around $530.00 at the main campus and $511.00 at the satellite campuses. For Florida Resident graduate students, tuition is around $365.00 per credit hour while Non-Florida Resident graduate tuition is around $765.00.

Athletics provided by the university consist of recreational clubs, intramural teams and competitive teams. The competitive sports are baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, sailing, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. For students who want to stay in shape but lack the spare time to join a team, there is also a recreational center on campus.
