The University of Texas, or UT, has a rich and interesting history. After the what is now the state of Texas obtained its independence from Mexico in 1836, the new Congress of Texas adopted provisions to establish universities within its republic borders. To this end, nearly 40 acres of land was parceled out near the capital of Austin and designated "College Hill". Shortly after, in 1846, Texas was brought into the United States of America as a new state, but unfortunately for Texas, and its fledgling university systems, the American Civil War halted educational system plans. Around 1876, about a decade after the war had ended, plans to establish "The University of Texas" were hatched by the Texas Constitution. In 1881, Austin was designated as the birthplace of the main campus and the University of Texas opened its doors in 1883.

There have been several key milestones in UT's history, ranging from the infamous to the astounding. Part of the university's past which it wishes to forget is August 1, 1966 when Charles Whitman became the first school shooter in American history. Other historical marks are not nearly as grim. 1969 marked the opening of the Jester Center which has been dubbed the largest on-campus housing hall in North America, as well as the largest building project in university history. In 1971 the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum opened as the first presidential library on a university campus. More recent milestones include the opening of the Blanton Museum of Art in 2006 and the expansion of the Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium to a 100,000 seating capacity, making it the largest stadium in Texas.

Today, UT's property holdings have ballooned to around 1400 acres. The main campus consists of over 150 buildings featuring seven museums and seventeen libraries. UT has the fifth largest campus enrollment in the United States as of Fall 2010, and the city of Austin provides many off-campus housing opportunities for UT's diverse and expansive student enrollment of over 50,000 students. Academically, UT ranks near the top of American schools and currently sits at 45th total, with a ranking of 13th among public universities. The university contains two academic units and a mixture of sixteen various schools and colleges.

Devoted UT fans consider themselves to be Longhorns and wear burnt orange and white as their colors. UT operates under the NCAA Division I-FBS and is a member of the Big 12 Conference. Traditionally the university has been considered a football powerhouse, but as recently as 2008 its athletics program as a whole ranked fifth among Division I schools highlighting its elite status in athletics.
