University of Washington
On November 4, 1861, what was originally known as the Territorial University of Washington opened. One of the oldest public universities on the west coast, UW was built on donated land in what is now the heart of downtown Seattle. Due to lack of funds, the school was forced to close several times early on. By 1889, however, enrollment was expanding rapidly. Washington became a state, and development in Seattle was booming, so no additional land was available. Therefore, classes began at its present location in Seattle in 1895. Expansion campuses in Bothell and Tacoma, Washington opened in 1990. The school is renowned, particularly for its extensive research and graduate programs.
In the fall of 2010, nearly 50,000 students were enrolled in the university; 21% higher than the previous year. Full time in state tuition for the 2011-2012 school year is set at $10,574 for undergraduates, and ranges from $12,667 to $17,957 for graduate students. Out of state tuition is set at $27,827 for undergraduates and ranges from $25,557 to $32,167 for graduate students.
Room and board expenses are estimated from $9,771 to $13,812 for the coming school year. There are nine residence halls. On and off campus apartments, studios and town homes are also available. The University of Washington provides family housing for married students and registered same sex partners as well.
There are about 250 degree programs within the sixteen Colleges and Schools at UW . The School of Medicine, School of Business and College of Engineering are among the highest ranked in the nation. Thousands of Bachelors, Masters, Doctorate and Professional degrees are given out annually. The university prides itself on its outstanding faculty, who hail from around the world, bringing expertise and innovation to each and every course offering.
The university is a member of the PAC 12, a western U.S. athletic conference. The 9 men’s and 10 women’s sports are all in Division 1 of the NCAA. The school boasted its sixth NCAA national championship in 2009 when the women’s softball team defeated the University of Florida. The school also excels in football, rowing and track and field.
Also known as the Huskies, students and alumni wear the school colors of purple and gold proudly. The official mascot, however, was not chosen until 1922. The previous choice, the Sundodger, was fairly short-lived. Some thought it was too intangible, while others resented the negative reference to Seattle’s rainy climate. The choice of the Alaskan Malamute, a specific breed, was chosen because of its strength, and that it captured the spirit of the Pacific Northwest.
Among notable alumni are Nobel Laureate Linda S. Buck, Pulitzer Prize winner and journalist Timothy Egan, and former Speaker of the House Tom Foley.
