Located in Nashville, Vanderbilt University was founded by Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1873 upon his contribution of one million dollars to create the university. The school property started out with a modest campus of 75 acres and has grown in leaps and bounds to just over 300 acres. At the turn of the 21st century student enrollment broke the 10,000 mark which is quite an accomplishment, considering the schools entire student body was 307 in 1875. The schools population seems to double every fifty years.
Continuously ranked on the list of the nation's top 20 universities, Vandy is currently home to nearly 12,000 students in both undergraduate and graduate programs. These programs are housed in 10 schools of study. These schools offer a vast variety of programs including education, divinity, medicine, nursing, engineering, liberal arts and sciences, music and human development as well as a wide spectrum of graduate and professional degrees.
With such a large number of Commodores to look after, Vanderbilt offers quite a resource when deciding on student housing. The on-campus housing community is large and is made available to both first year and upperclass students as they work to complete their undergraduate degrees. Currently 89% of undergraduates live on-campus. The office of housing and residential education offers an off-campus referral service to those students hoping to live away from school or those enrolled in graduate, professional and doctoral programs.
Along with the stellar academic programs to choose from, Vanderbilt provides an extensive athletic program with various sports for both men and women. With over half of the current student population comprised of women, it is no surprise that there are a multitude of sports for women. Men's varsity teams include basketball, baseball, cross country, football and golf. Women's varsity teams include basketball, bowling, cross country, golf lacrosse, tennis, track and field, soccer and swimming. In the 2006-2007 season, Vanderbilt was home to seven teams ranked nationally in the top 25 list.
To attend Vanderbilt is to walk in the light of great achievers that have come before; a large number of Vandy Alumni can be found in prestigious positions such as heading corporations, on the judicial bench, in the pulpit, Congress, conducting innovative medical research, playing in the NFL, Major Leaque Baseball and appearing on or writing for the stage and screen. Two goals throughout college is the education itself but most importantly the career that one is able to obtain upon successful graduation. Not only does the privately supported university cater to students but it is proud to be the second largest private employer in the entire state of Tennessee as well as the largest private employer located in Middle Tennessee.
