Maryland
The history of the state of Maryland dates back to the early 1600s, when English settlers first arrived in the region. The area that is now Maryland was originally inhabited by several Native American tribes, including the Algonquin, Piscataway, and Susquehannock.
In 1632, King Charles I of England granted a charter for the Maryland Colony to Cecilius Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore. The colony was named in honor of Queen Henrietta Maria, the wife of King Charles I. The colony was established as a refuge for English Catholics, who faced religious persecution in England.
In the late 1600s, Maryland became a center of commerce and trade, and it was one of the 13 original colonies that took part in the American Revolution. After the Revolution, Maryland became one of the original 13 states to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1788.

The state bird of Maryland is the Baltimore Oriole. The Baltimore Oriole is a brightly colored bird with a distinctive orange plumage and a black head. It is known for its beautiful song and is a popular symbol of the state.
